  BUTTERFLY VESSEL

rban demands led to a need for pottery molds and mass production. This jar is decorated on both sides with a Teotihuacan-style butterfly motif impressed on a mold-made plaque, which was attached to the vase before it was fired in the kiln. This vessel was probably made in a region under strong Teotihuacan influence, rather than in Teotihuacan itself. The butterfly was an important symbol of renewal and fertility to the Teotihuacanos and can be found in much of their art.
